Yesterday I was talking with a colleague about language learning and the (logical) similarities between different languages. Because of my German studies, I noted that the way this language organize number counting is almost the same used by English, Spanish and Portuguese.
Ontem eu estava conversando com um colega sobre aprendizado de linguagens e as similaridades (lógicas) entre diferentes línguas. Por causa dos meus estudos de Alemão, eu percebi que a maneira que esta linguagem organiza a contagem por números é basicamente a mesma usada por Inglês, Espanhol e Português.
From zero until ten, each number has a particular name. It is visible that German and English are "brothers", the same with Spanish and Portuguese. There are also one or another connection between languages at numbers like three, six, seven and nine.
De zero a dez, cada número possui um nome particular. É visível que que o Alemão e o Inglês são "irmãos", o mesmo com Espanhol e Português. Há uma ou outra conexão entre as línguas em números como três, seis, sete e nove.
Ten and eleven are both new names, but from twelve until twenty, the names share parts with their originators. Twelve remembers two, thirteen, three, and so on. The same thing occurs with all four languages.
Dez e onze são ambos novos nomes, mas de doze até vinte, os nomes compartilham partes com seus originadores. Doze lembra dois, treze, três, e assim por diante. O mesmo acontece com todas as quatro línguas.
German and English again share similarities with twenty / zwanzig, that resembles two / zwei. Spanish and Portuguese both have new names for this number.
Alemão e Inglês novamente compartilham semelhanças com vinte, que lembra a dois. Espanhol e Português possuem novos nomes para esse número.
The multiples of ten also are correlated to their origins. The endings show this paternity, with "zig", "ty", "enta" and "enta" for German, English, Spanish and Portuguese, respectively. One hundred has a particular name, but again its visible the resemblances German-English and Spanish-Portuguese.
Os múltiplos de dez também são correlacionados às suas origens. Os finais mostram essa paternidade, com "zig", "ty", "enta" e "enta" para Alemão, Inglês, Espanhol e Português, respectivamente. Cem leva um nome particular, mas novamente se vê as semelhanças Alemão-Inglês e Espanhol-Português.
At last, all languages follow the same rule to form numbers higher than twenty (and not in the tables already shown): Just compose them! From below you can see that Spanish has an exception for numbers in the twenties family, but even these are compositions.
Por último, todas as línguas seguem as mesma regra para formar números maiores que vinte (e não presentes nas tabelas já mostradas): Apenas componha-os! Abaixo se vê que o Espanhol tem uma exceção para números na família dos vinte, mas mesmo esses são composições.
From what we discussed, is possible to say that is difficult to study languages? If you start without considering any kind of correlation, maybe yes. But with a little attention, we can see that they are related, derived from each other. And this helps us much at memorizing new words. German and English are germanic languages, Spanish and Portuguese are romance languages. Always check the history of the language you wanna study, this certainly will give you a lot of background when learning vocabulary.
A partir do que discutimos, é possível dizer que é difícil estudar línguas? Se você começar sem considerar nenhum tipo de correlação, talvez sim. Mas com um pouco de atenção, podemos ver que as línguas são relacionadas, derivadas umas das outras. E isso ajuda muito na memorização novas palavras. Alemão e Inglês são línguas germânicas, Espanhol e Português são línguas romanas. Sempre verifique a história da língua que você deseja estudar, isso certamente lhe dará muito conhecimento prévio na hora de aprender vocabulário.
